"Listen" Volume Buttons with the phone in stand by

Hi there. This is my first time and I´m new in the programming world, so I have a question that may be is not very smart.

Is there any way to write an application that can use the volume buttons for other purpose than volume? I want to write an application that make different things with the volume buttons when the phone is in stand by. Is that possible?

It might be possible, but Apple advise that they’ll reject your app from the App Store for doing so (see guideline 2.5.9 of the review guidelines here).
