How far can this book get you?

Hello, I’m interested into this book.
Thanks to the fact that it’s in preview, and iOS 10 Feast coupon, and value change I can actually buy it for 38 €, sensibly fewer than the future fixed price of 54$ (49€).

I was wondering how far can this book get me after I’ll complete it and practice on it. What worries me most is the 3d art part… I am a decent programmer but I’m not at all into 3d modeling or professional texturing. It’s also true that I could either take free assets, buy them, or hire someone (I also know friends), but still I feel it as a limitation as I should push when I actually believe in something (a game idea) and I shouldn’t when I’m just doing it for fun.
I’ve also seen that the book won’t talk much of Unity2D (1 of 4 chapters), but maybe one along with site tutorial is enough.

Is the book for me or it isn’t? Or it could be if I plan to master 3d skills? Anyway I don’t think that I would jump in 3d gaming in Unity but I would try doing something nice in 2D first.
Not that I dislike 3d, but in that case still I’d make an arcade game

It will definitely get you started with working in 3D, but yes, it is difficult. If you have Unity experience and are looking into advanced topics, then this book won’t be for you. If you are looking to get started with Unity and learn how to work with the various systems, then this is a great place to start.

As for Unity 2D, it’s used in two chapters which covers the specific 2D objects. But Unity 2D is just the 3D engine with some convenience classes. If you were aiming to learn just Unity2D, you’d still need to get up to speed with the rest of the engine so this will have you covered.

In any case, if you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out to me at any time. Thanks!

I don’t know Unity almost at all (but I know C#). I know it’s gonna be hard and thankfully the book is for beginners (but I wouldn’t dislike to see more advanced books in this site).
My worries are about my chances to make some good games in Unity after completing book and its challenges… I will have to practice a lot for sure, but most worry as mentioned earlier is the assets. I don’t want this thing to stop me from making games, but surely scares me if I’m gonna take months in the future just for learning to make nice models.

The games in preview looks good and well-made… well unlike Apple 2D Games By Tutorial book, I don’t have the feeling that if I finish the book, I will be able to make games like those, maybe just write the code and scripts.

I wonder if it’s the good/recommended resource to let me get started to make games like slay.one (2.5D but actually 2D engined) or arcade games like Rolling Sky (3D), which actually doesn’t have complex 3d models and I would be able easily to either look for free ones or even make my own.

Apple Games’s series looks nice but it’s 2 books (so really expensive) and above all is bound to iOS… That’s why I’m looking for an alternative.

If you’re looking for a cross-platform game engine to make professional level games, it seems like Unity (and Unity Games by Tutorials) is perfect for you.

If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about not being able to make the 3D models for the games. Honestly most programmers don’t have the skills to do this, and instead work with an artist.

In fact, that is what we did for all of the games in the book! We hired an artist (the excellent Mike Berg from weheartgames.com) and he did all the models, and each author just handled the programming side. If you make your own game I’d recommend the same approach.

Best of luck! :]

Hey Ray thanks a lot for the answer… Nice to know that I’m not the only one with these troubles (well, obvious I was not the only one, but I thought that game devs were more independent - and still I think they are quite, I can’t even use Photoshop - than me).

I was not able to find previews for the book… I’m really interested at the 7 pages of Introduction (page 10 as I read from the index so far), that describes what and how will be accomplished (I’m curious how much the book targets PC and smartphones, since this site is a lot (but not only) focused on mobile development. Also I’d like to know more about the games that will be developed, specifically the 2D not because I only care about 2d (I care about 3d too) but because the others have been shown more in the trailer (the two shooters). Can you publish or show me the Introduction?

Also it looks like the book won’t explain procedural generation… little sad note. but nevertheless the games explained look good.

I also wanted to ask… how many pages will the final book be? My troubles in reading books is that I start great but get slower and slower the closer to the end ^^ (but because I get into making things plus studying at university)

Nvm I bought it some minutes ago… I was too curious. I’ll share my feedback next days and hopeful to make some good games.

I have a similar concern. How far can I really get in this book? I have some C# experience and I’m stuck in a place where I feel like I don’t know enough, so I keep learning the standard language stuff over and over again. I really wanted to get into Unity3D, but I decided to give Swift another go because I felt I could get immediate satisfaction from building something that way.

I don’t want to be in this holding pattern forever. I need to leave that honeymoon phase and take that leap! I guess my question is, will I be able to make my own games from scratch with what I learn in this book? I mean seriously make my own games. I don’t want to follow the book, create these games, and then feel as if without the book’s guidance I can’t do it alone. Will I learn the concepts behind what I’m coding with this book? Will I sharpen my coding skills or am I just typing what I see? Please help! Thank you!

I consider myself a programmer and I CANNOT draw at all. But lets be realistic, the book is ore less on programming not really art even if it might touch on it. If you want to be a full fledged artist you might want to look at a MAYA 3D tutorial probably. Unless you’re really gifted, it;s best if you do your programming with place holder art then buy assets cause creating those is a topic in it’s self
